Peace Brigades International accompany members of the San José de Apartadó Peace Community in their regular community work in the Uraba region in Colombia. Male members of the peace community come together in the mountains around Uraba with shovels and picks, and all the strength they have, with the aim of improving the muddy pathways leading to their villages. There is limited investment by the government in building infrastructure, such as roads, electricity, clean water. Civilians have to fend for themselves in order to survive, and they do so by uniting through collaborative community work as shown in this video. Founded in March 1997, the Peace Community was set up by citizens who sought to separate themselves from the conflict by refusing entry to all armed groups - guerrillas, paramilitaries and the state security forces. The community is accompanied by PBI (volunteers in the video are Taline and Dino), and Friendship for Reconciliation (FOR).
