http://www.ted.com Hacker and writer Joshua Klein is fascinated by crows. (Notice the gleam of intelligence in their little black eyes?) After a long amateur study of corvid behavior, he's come up with an elegant machine that may form a new bond between animal and human.

Nov 23, 2008 - No wonder Edgar Allen Poe wrote a famous poem called "The Raven". That was in 1845.
korechnyevaya86 Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - Crows and ravens are actually two different birds.
jackjen1 Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - Raven belongs to genus Corvus, it is a 'Crow', and there are many different types.
Truthiness231 Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - A decade of work but it paid off. This is now one of my favorite videos from TED; that was all sorts of awesomeness in just over 10 minutes.
Truthiness231 Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - ... correction, that was an even 10:00.
goingwithzed Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - very much enjoyed that in particular the synopsis. we have a need for things that other species would gladly do in exchange for something we come by easily... nuts and search and rescue was a great example
xiner Says:

BoozyBeggar Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - I remember a few years back Adam Carolla talking about trained attack crows on loveline and how cool it would be to have attack crows.
importpunch Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - Fantastic.
tigsdk Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - This reminds me of a German (I think) experiment where they found out that one old crow recognised herself in the mirror, which is a VERY intelligent thing to do.
papatoony Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - I was hoping that after all the coins were gone off of the ground the crows would go out into the city, pick up change and then fly it back to the vending machine to buy peanuts. Wouldn't that be a logical next step??
papatoony Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - I know, even I wouldn't have thought of that! LOL
tekemperor Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - That was what he implied.
zettabyte Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - it sounded like his sub msg was "crows aren't working so lets train them to need money and then give them jobs"
SpoolDonkey Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - i can see the stadium idea working... if they can pick up coins they can pick up trash, the problem is greed, you will need real big garbage colecting machines and a load of peanuts, after the stadium is clean they will not stop, they will keep fetching more and more trash, rocks other dead crows and anything they can get there ''hands'' on.
eoinycroiny Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - wow!!! thats kinda freaky
tardesnegras Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - second time watching this still amazes me.
runnergunner3 Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - They are highly adaptable, so this could be controlled with the introduction of a colored light to trigger them that the machine is now accepting trash. I do find it humorous to think that they may steal someone's hanging laudry or swoop in to nab someone's groceries in order to obtain a peanut.
Thrillseeker666 Says:
Nov 23, 2008 - That's amazing
eightdollarwater Says:

Nov 23, 2008 - Rather incredible. I'm going to have to look more into crows, never realized how intelligent they are.
